Showing up in AI search: six basics beat new tricks
Google says no special optimization is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The six basics from its documentation, applied to a clinic website.

Clinics now get frequent offers for “AI search optimization”. Some vendors promise an AI-only file. Before you sign anything, read what Google itself has written.
What Google has stated
The guidance on AI features in Google Search Central comes down to this.
Google states there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode”, and that no special optimization is needed either.
The same document says you do not need AI text files or special markup. There is one condition: the page has to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet.
By Google’s standard, at least, producing an AI-only file is not a requirement for being shown.
The six basics you still need
Here are the items the document lists, applied to a clinic website.
- Can crawlers get in? Check that
robots.txtis not blocking your treatment pages. Settings from a redesign are sometimes left in place. - Can pages be reached from inside the site? Important pages should be reachable through menus and in-text links. A page you can only reach by search is hard for crawlers too.
- Is it pleasant to use? Slow pages, pop-ups over the text and clipped letters on a phone drive away both people and crawlers.
- Is the important content in text? A treatment guide uploaded as a single poster image has no words to read. It is the most common problem on clinic websites.
- Do images and video support the text? That is better than text alone. Images must not replace the text.
- Does structured data match the visible text? Do not put content in code that is not on the screen.
One question splits into many
Google explains that its AI features break one question into multiple related searches. When someone asks for an English-speaking dermatologist in Seoul, the system looks separately for location, language support, treatments and how to book.
So rather than one page that holds everything, it helps to have a page that answers each sub-question.
- Treatment guides with recovery time
- Which languages you support, and how interpreting works
- Directions, with nearby hotels and stations
- How to book and how to ask
Where to find the numbers
Impressions and clicks from AI features are counted inside the Web search type of the Search Console performance report. They are part of the total and are not shown as a separate line.
If a report says AI search traffic multiplied, first ask which tool counted it and how.
Frequently asked questions
Do we need an AI-only text file?
Google says you do not. Other AI services collect content in their own ways. What works across them is text that crawlers can read and pages with clear sources.
Does structured data make us more likely to appear in AI answers?
The documentation does not say special markup is required. If you add it, it has to match the visible text.
Does publishing a lot of pages help?
No. Google’s spam policies treat generating many pages without adding value for users as scaled content abuse. For a clinic there is the added risk of wrong medical information slipping in.
